Job Summary

The incumbent in this position will be responsible for assisting the ARS team with supporting the UCSF Research Compliance groups by creating, communicating, and implementing their vision and requirements, configuring system functionality to meet end-user needs, and working on and management of projects such as the onboarding of new labs and biobanks into BSIP-supported systems. They will help establish objectives and work plans and assist with performing the tasks necessary to accomplish the tasks that align with the agreed-upon outcomes.

This position will be heavily involved in system analysis, data migration, system demonstrations, configuration, testing, and support as well as developing system documentation that aids users with use and management of the system. The incumbent in this position will analyze complex issues, document use cases, and work within defined procedures and practices, recommending the appropriate action. In addition, they will need to intimately learn the system to provide an adequate support system for end users.

This position works with different levels of stakeholders in the research areas including the other departmental IT resources and third-party vendors to support different areas of research. Works with stakeholders to configure the system and reports changes needed to meet business processes and requirements, and based on those requirements provides recommended technical solutions, and tools. These solutions will be supported by central IT and the incumbent will be working with and a part of that team to either enhance or expand current offerings to support business and security requirements or provide recommendations for successful support.

The Research System Analyst will work closely with the Biospecimen Informatics Systems Supervisor, Research Systems Business Analysis, Research Solutions Architect, and BSIP Program Manager as well as various members of the ARS team, to oversee the implementation, set-up and management of the research services and support. In addition, they will need to work with the various teams in UCSF's central IT and learn how they can be used to meet the requirements of the research community. Areas include UCSF's Security, Compliance, Research Data, Research Administrative Applications, and Research Infrastructure (on-prem and cloud).

Department Description

This position will be housed within the Central IT, which provides architecture, infrastructure, network, security, analytics, integration, and application support services and is essential to the organization's ability to support growth, mitigate security risk, and manage, store, and share sensitive information. Specifically this position will report to the Academic Research Services Team (ARS), which is focused on providing the central services for researchers.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or 3-5 years equivalent work experience in a related field.
  • 3+ years equivalent work experience with an emphasis in computer science, data processing, computer information systems, system support, or a related field.
  • Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, issues and documenting the actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination, and analysis.
  • Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development, and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced skills associated with design, modification/system configuration, and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development lifecycle. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
  • Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks.
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users, and dependent/related functions.
  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements.
  • Familiarity with research compliance applications and management of these applications.
  • Experience with LIMS or ERP systems.
