This is a one (1) year 100% Contract position. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs and funding of the department.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The organizing principle of the Integrative Oceanography Division (IOD) resides in a shared commitment to collaborative, interdisciplinary science. "Integrative" denotes our philosophy that multiple approaches are important in creating a better understanding of the ocean system. We take great pride in our membership of physical, biological, chemical and geological oceanographers, climate and information scientists, data and information managers, engineers, technicians, education specialists, administrative and management professionals. IOD distinguishes itself as scientific home for researchers working at the boundaries of traditional academic spheres and generating growing programs in the integration of research with informatics as well as with education and public outreach. From pelagic to benthic ecology, shoreline to open ocean dynamics, data to information systems, our research encompasses field work, laboratory experimentation and computer modeling to acquire, integrate, synthesize and understand diverse data sets to elucidate the underlying dynamics of complex, multidimensional ocean systems.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under direct guidance, responsible for deploying, operating, and maintaining field equipment to conduct topographic coastal surveys and in-situ sensors. Supports research projects that rely on field observations by assisting with program planning and logistical issues. Field work may occur outside of regular business hours.

Work with senior staff to coordinate research activities and operation of instrumentation. Applies various software packages, geographic information systems (GIS), programming languages, and established procedures to support field research projects.

Process, perform quality control, archive, and analyze point cloud coastal topographic data and other oceanographic data to create plots and figures for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations. Assist experienced staff to collect GPS, LiDAR, and drone-based coastal surveys and maintain field and laboratory equipment. Study documentation, logs and reports, keeping current with the latest technologies and research advances. Support team to establish procedures and assist with the development of research protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Working knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate 4x4 vehicle in sandy and off road environments, and experience with towing.

  • Experience operating ATVs and UTVs safely.

  • Ability to swim.

  • Demonstrated ability to use of geospatial software, word processing (e.g. Word or Google Docs), spreadsheets (e.g. Excel or Sheets), and presentation packages and willingness and ability to update ad increase skills and knowledge as needed.

  • Experience processing and analyzing point cloud and topographic data.

  • Proficient research and analytical skills. Experience analyzing and imaging environmental data. Experience documenting analysis and results through reports, manuscripts, or publications.

  • Ability to conduct database, folder, file management.

  • Experience establishing procedures, developing protocols, and coordinating research logistics.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the group. Ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities including academics, staff, students, and volunteers.

  • Ability to work in ambiguous conditions.

  • Ability to work with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Self motivated, independent, able to learn quickly, and demonstrate problem solving skills. Possesses the ability to follow through with assigned tasks until completed.

  • Working knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.

  • Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.

  • Working knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites.

  • Experience with literature review, study documentation, logs, and reports.

  • Must be able to move heavy instruments, equipment, and supplies.

  • Valid driver's license. Ability to drive in a safe manner.

  • Willing to work outside of normal 8AM - 4PM business hours.

  • Experience with drone data acquisition, ground control data processing, image processing and SFM software preferred but not required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  1. Position is subject to a DMV check for driving record and valid driver's license.

  2. Must be willing to work overtime; occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  3. Ability to pass the ATV Safety Institute Rider Course.

  4. Position will involve some physical labor for both field work and everyday tasks.

  5. Job offer is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $56,700 - $97,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.16 - $46.70

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
