Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego is one of the most important centers for global earth science research and education in the world. Facilities Operations and Planning is a unit within Scripps Administration, with responsibility for planning and managing facilities/capital improvement projects and space in buildings at SIO, including the Hydraulics Laboratory, Seaweed Canyon Research Support Facility, Nimitz Marine Facility and other off-campus assets.

The H-lab is affiliated with the Marine Sciences Development Center (MSDC), which provides manufacturing and technical support on a recharge basis for users of the H-Lab and other experimental facilities including pressure testing vessels and a deep tank facility. https://scripps.ucsd.edu/hlab

The SIO Experimental Facilities Engineer is responsible for operation, oversight and maintenance of institutionally-owned shared research facilities. The primary facilities assigned to this position are the H-Lab and Keck OAR, but also at other facilities such as the Marine Conservation and Technology Facility, and Scripps Pier. Responsibilities include the design, specifications, fabrication, modification, operation, and maintenance of various scientific modeling and research facilities and associated support systems and equipment. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional in a specialized engineering field to teach, train, and supervise researchers, technical staff, graduate and undergraduate students and non-affiliates on the safe operation and use of all systems. Responsible for implementing safety and risk management policies and procedures. Under direction, is involved in all aspects of technical equipment design, specification, development and construction/modification of facilities where subject matter knowledge relevant to research objectives and methodology is of great value in understanding and establishing engineering design criteria. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. To execute these activities, the Experimental Facilities Engineer is expected to work with campus departments (notably MSDC, Scripps Administration, SIO Academic Department, UCSD Facilities Management, and Environmental Health & Safety).

• Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.

• Experience in plumbing, including design, selection and installation of plumbing systems to be used in conjunction with seawater systems, as well as domestic water systems.
  Specific knowledge of high and low pressure plumbing techniques to include milled & stainless steels, copper, brass and plastic.

• Working knowledge of electrical systems wiring, installation, and testing.

• Experience utilizing resources efficiently; including electrical and mechanical test equipment, heavy machinery, machine tools, computers, lifting and transportation equipment.

• Experience reading and understanding blueprints, equipment/instrument design plans and specifications. Ability to keep thorough, accurate records and archive important information including plans, blueprints, vendor histories, etc.

• Ability to operate small & large (32,000 pound lifting) forklifts, stakebed trucks, cranes/hoists, scissor lifts, and other heavy material handling devices.

• Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including good service orientation and effective problem solving.

• Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations. Experience reviewing safety, security, and asset management policies and procedures

• Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.

• Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
